GlimmerStatsBar (mac stats bar) vs Uptime Kuma
GlimmerStatsBar (mac stats bar) offers Cloud and Mac checks inside its wider monitoring app. Uptime Kuma is an open-source monitor that you install and operate on your own host.
| Feature | GlimmerStatsBar (mac stats bar) | Uptime Kuma |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and operation | Use a verified account for managed Cloud checks or checks from the selected Mac. | Install the monitor, keep its host online, and maintain updates and backups. |
| Beyond a basic website request | Expected HTTP status, required text, slow-response threshold and Cloud SMTP greeting checks. | HTTP, keywords, JSON queries, TCP, DNS, push, Docker and other monitor types. |
| Alerts and public updates | Email outage, reminder and recovery alerts; optional Mac notifications. No public status page. | Many notification integrations and public status pages with custom domains. |
| Mac monitoring | Menu bar readings, app histories, network maps and local recording. | A web dashboard for endpoint checks, rather than a native Mac menu bar monitor. |
The host determines whether checks keep running
Choose Cloud, This Mac or both for a website. Cloud checks continue while your Mac is asleep or offline. This Mac checks show the view from the selected Mac and need it awake, online and running GlimmerStatsBar.
Uptime Kuma can run on an always-on server or a cloud VPS. It is not limited to a local computer. If its host stops, its checks stop; you own that availability, the installation and the retained monitoring records.
Free software and operating cost are different
Website checks require a verified account. Free allows 1 monitor at a 5-minute minimum interval; Starter allows 2 at 5 minutes, Plus 5 at 1 minute and Pro 20 at 30 seconds. Larger plans are separate from the free Mac monitoring app.
Uptime Kuma is MIT-licensed software. Hosting, maintenance and any external notification costs are your responsibility. Choose it when control and its wider monitor types justify running the system yourself.
Compare the monitoring approach
Choose GlimmerStatsBar for managed Cloud checks and a Mac-specific view alongside system readings. Choose Uptime Kuma for self-hosting, more endpoint types, public status pages and control over the installation. Neither choice requires calling a sleeping laptop an outage.
